Pre-WW1 Antique Canadian Issue India Pattern Brown Bess Musket -40th Battalion New Brunswick
Antique India Pattern Brown Bess Musket, 76 Cal. flintlock, measuring 54 1/2 inches overall with a 39 inch round steel barrel and a period added blade front sight. Full length English Walnut stock with both steel barrel bands in place and a brass butt plate, brass nose cap, trigger guard, lock serpentine and circular, flared brass barrels holding the issue steel ramrod in place. Action is marked "London" behind the hammer, with the side of the steel lock being marked "Ramsay Sutherland". The right side of the stock has been period hand inscribed "Westmorland M, No. XL B" for the Westmorland Militia 40th Battalion, New Brunswick, which is now Saint John NB. The rifle is in it's all original, untouched condition with all of the finish being original to the rifle. The proof marked barrel has nice and even aged patina finish with no pitting or disruption in the finish being present. The wood full length stock also with all of the original and untouched aged finish that is bright showing the grain if the wood, and also the aged finish with handling marks present as to be expected. Stock markings are deep and crisp, being very visible and of course original to the gun. The walls of the steel barrel still retain a large amount of thickness with the lock functioning correctly, with tight untouched screws and a strong and positive hammer spring.
