Cased WW2 British lifeboat compass, medal construction on a metal pivoting holder, held in a wood case with sliding top cover. Case measures 4 3/4 inches square, and 3 1/4 inches in height with dovetailed corners. Manufactures label in place to the bottom interior of the case. Missing the needle to the face of the compass but still displays very well. Named on 2 sides of the exterior of the case, "James Polk". The following notation is with the compass. "Lifeboat compass salvaged from the lifeboat of James Polk, one four liberty ships torpedoed off British Guiana, March 14, 1943. All vessels had been abandoned and were towed to Port Of Spain, Trinidad by escort group. Obtained directly from the family. SKU: 63319
