WW2 U.S. Deactivated Liberator FP45 Pistol

Stamped metal construction with a cast metal slide, single shot pistol originally chambered for the 45 ACP cartridge, Removeable sliding gate to the bottom of the grip that contained 5 extra round that were wrapped in brown wax paper. A short, round barrel, that did not have any rifling. a number has been etched into the left side of the frame for the purpose of the original registration, as these firearms were never serial numbered. Current spec deactivation with no moving parts other than the disconnected trigger, and removeable slide plate at the bottom of the grip, with both interior and exterior welds. This pistol had its origins in the US Army Joint Psychological Committee and was designed for the United States Army in 1942 by the Inland Guide Lamp Manufacturing Division of the General Motors Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. Due to the unrifled barrel, it was intended for very a close ambush with its maximum effective range being only about 25 feet. The concept was that the pistol was to be used to disarm an enemy soldier, and "Liberate" his firearms and ammunition, hence the name. After production, the Army turned the Liberators over to the OSS. The Liberator was never intended for front line service. It was originally intended as an insurgency arm to be mass dropped behind enemy lines to resistance fighters in an occupied territory. A resistance fighter was to recover the pistol, sneak up on an Axis occupier, kill or incapacitate him, and retrieve his firearms and ammunition.
